2025 Prospects Big Board

Azad Earl's 1st edition of the 2025 prospects rankings for the 2025 MLB Draft.
Our rankings will start off with 100 players, and expand every other week with players being added with each update until the draft is here. Since we're a college baseball site, it'll only include players of the college variety. Included in each player's tab is their counting stats, traditional stats, and advanced ones as well as a write-up. While the list is analytical, it's still subjective and will change consistently throughout the year as players improve/regress. This is far from a science and while we'll try to get the evaluations right, there will always be room for error.

Jackson was a highly regarded prep in 2022, ultimately being selected in the 18th round by the Houston Astros, but chose to attend Arizona State instead. He hasn’t quite lived up to his prospect status over the past two years, but there’s still intrigue here. The hit tool profiles as solid average, with the underlying data painting a respectable picture. The power is there, posting a 110.3 mph max EV in 2024, but he’s yet to tap into it with the bulk of his batted balls coming at suboptimal LAs. There’s still projection left on the body and he’s a good enough defender to have a shot in CF at the next level.

Kyle Wolff isn’t going to be an aesthetic pick for a team this summer, but he’ll be the right pick for whoever gets the chance to take him. At 6’1 210 lbs it’s a stalky build, and a 1B type long term which caps the upside. The draw here is the bat, which is about as well rounded as you’ll get. Chase rate and whiff rate are both near-20%, and his zone whiffs are at 11.3%. There’s above-average power, and he gets to it. He had a 110 mph max EV in 2024 with more than half of his batted balls being >95 mph. 24% barrel rate and his launch profile painting a line-drive picture is a good sign as well. Playing in the ACC, models will look upon him kindly.

Ligon is a high stuff senior sign, a profile that's done well in recent years. He's touched 99 mph from a low release height with average shape, but will get results regardless. He's got 2 breaking ball shapes, both of which are thrown in the mid-80s, being a slider with 5" of glove-side and a curveball with 4" of depth and 4" of sweep. His change-up averages 89 mph with minimal vertical and 13.5" of arm-side. His command is touch and go, which will be a key for him in terms of draft positioning.

I’m not 100% sold on Hugus as a starter yet, but the stuff plays. He’s up to 96 mph this spring with 19.5” of carry on his fastball. He throws his slider hard, 85-88 mph, with 5.6” of sweep. He throws a big curveball shape at 76 mph with -16” vertical break and 13” of sweep, which would be better at higher velocity with less total movement for me. His change up is more of a splitter with 5” of vertical break and 5” of arm-side, drawing 40% whiffs.

A transfer from Utah Valley to LSU, Dickinson is a hit over power 2B type. In 2024 he posted 13.8% whiffs, and just 8.2% in the strike zone. It’s plus or better feel to hit, with above-average swing decisions. He’s undersized and the power went cold on the Cape this summer, but he’s shown the ability to tap into average raw power at times. The launch angle profile is stable, but the production upside is still limited. During his time at Utah Valley there were some inconsistencies against velocity, granted in a small sample, but he’ll be able to put those concerns to bed at LSU.

Matthias flashed some of the better stuff in the country out of the pen for UNC last year. His four-seamer 22.5” of carry at 91-94, touching 95 mph. He throws 4 secondaries: cutter, slider, curveball, and change-up. He has great velocity and solid-average or better movement profiles on all 4, but has struggled to miss bats and draw chase. I feel good about the stuff, and think there’s enough in terms of command that he could end up a starter, and if not possibly a premium long-reliever.

I saw Moore in his first start of the year and thought the stuff was there, but the command was lacking, which has held true. He’s up to 97 mph, but sits closer to 92 mph on his fastball and has run into bats to the tune of a .440 wOBA. There’s an 80 mph sweeper shape in here, but it, too, has struggled to miss bats. His third pitch is a cutter, which has been solid in small samples. I’m highest on his splitter at 81 mph, which has been great when he throws it. He’s the kind of guy who will kill a stuff model, but the results are yet to come.

He’s whiffing about 26% of the time and has had trouble handling secondaries, which is of note. The fastball is 92-94 with 20” of carry, which has been his go-to. He throws a slider and a change-up, both carrying impressive results in small samples. He’ll show the mix in a more complete manner this spring, and could project as a solid mid-round college relief option.

He’s a very good receiver behind the plate with questions on the arm. He projects as an average defender behind the dish for me, but only time will tell. Offensively, this is another guy who’s swinging >50% of the time, with the chase and K numbers to prove it. The bat-to-ball skills and launch profiles are both above-average, with the raw power grading as a 50 for me. This is another guy who did himself a ton of favors on the Cape, slashing .299/.372/.496 in 36 games.

Martinez is a mid-major 1B who’s a hit-over-power type, which may be a hard sell for some. The positives here are that the contact quality and launch profiles have been outstanding thus far in his college career, and he was solid on the Cape, where he produced some SLG in addition to walking more than he struck out. If he’s able to take a jump on the EVs he’ll have a chance to fit in the third round range this summer.

Michel missed the majority of 2024 with a broken wrist and was shaky in the Cape during his return. A healthy Michel has premium power, with plus bat speed. The ultimate draft status will hinge on how well he’s able to limit strikeouts in 2025, which has been an issue in the past.

Fastball shape is suboptimal, with 16” of vertical and 14.4” of arm-side run. He’s been up to 96 mph, but sat 91.6 mph this spring. 5.5’ release height creates outlier approach angles, and will allow a true vertical profile fastball to play up in the zone. He’s got outstanding spin traits and threw a sweeper at 84 mph with 1.4” of lift and 8” of sweep. There’s a cutter he throws at 89 mph with 3.5” of vertical and 3” of glove-side, future plus offering and whiff pitch blending a big sweeper with his FF. The best pitch is a change-up at 85 mph with 16” of armside, killing spin at a plus level. Chrest has a general feel for the strike zone but needs to figure out the primary offering in order to project as a starter long term.

This is the third time he's been draft eligable in his college career, but the production has jumped this year in the SEC. He's got some of the best contact quality I've seen, with a .526 xwOBAcon and 40.7% barrel rate this year. He's got the whiff and chase number to match, which is good to see. I think he'll end up as a mid-round money saver, but the production is undeniable.

High bat speed, big raw power. He's whiffing less, but is steal beatable in the strike zone, though he's cut his chase rate to 25% and has been great against spin. He's got a 116 mph max EV, but an 11% barrel rate and sub-90 mph average EV, which is a concern.

He’s had mixed results on the fastball, but his best work has come off of his mid-80s slider which has been the best pitch in terms of whiffs and contact quality allowed. His change-up has an almost identical profile to his fastball, but is 9 mph slower, and drew elite results in a small sample last season.

Steele transferred from Samford to Auburn following the 2024 season and will aim to split time with Ike Irish behind the plate for the Tigers this season. It’s a bat first profile, with a strong hit tool boosted by minimal whiff and high level swing decisions. While the EVs are lackluster (108 max EV), the biggest draw for me is how consistently Steele puts the ball in the air, running a 23 degree average LA, 21.7 on his hard hits, while barreling the ball at a 25% clip. Steele’s number came down in 2024 from his freshman season, but the data is still strong and he’s got all the tools to make things work this season.

Cyr was productive in two years at Miami, and will aim to do the same in his first year at Florida in 2025. While he’s played shortstop in college, he lacks the arm strength to stick at the spot long-term and will likely move to 2B where he’ll play above-average defense. The power here is below average, with a 107 mph max EV, and he’s got some whiff to his game that’ll likely show up more frequently moving into pro ball.

The fastball shape is poor, getting 12" of vertical and 14" of arm-side in 2024 but is up a few ticks this year, touching 100 mph. The slider is really more of a cutter, getting 5.5" of carry and 3" of cut, while the change-up is about an average third pitch. It's a bullpen arm in my opinion, being velocity dependant with lacking shapes.

There’s obvious bat speed as well, but the EVs have lagged comparatively, with his 110 mph max EV leaving room to improve. Dalley will get a shot to prove it in the OF this year, and with some improvement on the hit tool could have a chance to fit in the third round range.
