Now I want to preface this article by saying that my only source is Wikipedia. You know, the website that we weren't even allowed to put in our bibliographies in our middle school papers because it wasn't credible. But let's ignore that for a few minutes while I tell you about how a mid major college baseball player potentially could pull off the coolest achievement in college baseball history.
Daniel Padysak is a Senior RHP for Charleston Southern out of the Big South Conference. It's the same conference that the Campbell Camels have been dominating over the last half decade or so. In fact, Charleston Southern actually upset the Camels in the 1st round of the 2022 Big South Conference tournament (Padysak started the game and went 4IP), but eventually lost twice in the championship to lose their shot at an NCAA Regional birth. Anyways, Padysak has played a big role on the mound for the Buccaneers. Last season he had 20 appearances and 41IP and in 2021 he pitched 62.2 innings. So coming into his Senior season, he will be heavily relied upon.
The cool part about Daniel Padysak is that he was born in the Czech Republic, so he is eligible to play for his home country in International tournaments, such as Olympic qualifiers and World Baseball Classic qualifiers. This is where we run into a slight problem. The 2023 World Baseball Classic runs smack dab in the middle of the 2023 NCAA baseball season. From March 9-13, Team Czech Republic is going to be playing in the Tokyo Dome against China, Australia, and Shohei Ohtani's Team Japan. Meanwhile, Charleston Southern is scheduled to play at the University of Georgia during those dates.
Although Team Czech Republic hasn't released their official WBC roster yet, Padysak is on their preliminary roster posted on the official WBC Wikipedia page. It's well deserving too because of his contributions to the team during the qualifier tournament this past fall, where he got the Win on the mound against Team Germany!
But here is my question... why aren't any other college baseball sites talking about this potentially amazing achievement? Maybe he isn't actually playing for Team Czech and has committed fully to Charleston Southern? Maybe they are waiting until he is officially announced on the roster before hyping this up? Or maybe I'm onto something that nobody has seemed to notice yet.
Obviously we will get answers here over the next few weeks, but I hope he ends up playing for Team Czech for the WBC. That way the whole college baseball community can have something to rally behind and root for when Team USA isn't playing.
